Sanku Breaks Ground on Micronutrient Premix Factory in Ethiopia
Sanku has broken ground on a nutrient premix factory in Addis Ababa, marking a major milestone in strengthening Ethiopia’s food fortification system and reducing long-term reliance on imported premix. Ethiopia produces staple foods at scale, yet malnutrition remains a persistent public health challenge. National data shows that 37 percent of children under five are stunted, while nearly one-third of women of reproductive age are anemic, driven in part by diets deficient in essential micronutrients.
The planned factory will localize the production of high-quality nutrient premix, reducing costs, stabilizing supply, and improving quality assurance for millers once operational. By manufacturing premix within Ethiopia, Sanku aims to enable more mills to fortify flour consistently and at scale.
Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 3,000 tonnes of premix annually, with capacity to support nutrition for up to 200 million people across Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa. Sanku acknowledges the Government of Ethiopia, development partners, donors, and project teams whose collaboration made this milestone possible.
